Wine and Wineries
Although less famous than wines of the other areas of Tuscany, such as Chianti, Montalcino and Bolgheri, Maremma also has become a land of wines so much so as to have obtained in 2011 its own DOC.
So over the past few decades important wine houses have opened vineyards in Maremma, transforming the landscape by planting extensive vineyards and engaging important architects for the construction of their cellars.
If Villa Banfi is a medieval castle and Colle Massari a fortified farm house of the fourteenth century, Renzo Piano has designed the red cellar of Rocca di Frassinello and the Studio Hydea of Florence the underground cellar of Mortelle for the Marchesi Antinori.
And Rocca di Montemassi owned by the Zonin family, hosts a curious museum of rural life, which collects antique tools and implements, in memory of a world that no longer exists.
